Notes from the valleys... Mule Pete Turnbull takes a tumble

Started training again last month after taking it easy in October, just easing into the sessions and looking to step up in December. Headed off to Cwm Carn with George on Saturday for a couple of laps. Almost at the finish of the second lap, on a flat section, had a sudden off - not sure if my front wheel washed out or hit something, but bar suddenly spun round and I hit the deck, knee first. Got a rather large gash in the right knee - photo attached. Rolled to the car park, had a quick shower, George strapped it up so I could drive to the hospital - lots of blood - in A&E for 4hrs including a 1hr cleaning of the wound under a local, but they couldn't get all the shit out so the wound was left open and strapped up. I was told to go back on Monday for a dressing change but was in work all day, assumed I'd be alright to go in first thing on Tuesday, but by then the wound had gone sceptic - lots of yellow puss, all my calf swollen and red with blood poisoning. So I was admitted to hospital for an op to clean and stitch the wound (under general) and then 3 different types of anti-biotics, straight into the vein, four times a day for the past 3 days. The doc I saw in A&E on Tues had a great "bedside manner" - told me unless I got the anti-biotics into my system fast, and the wound properly cleaned, then I might lose the leg from the knee down. Then went into great detail about all the possible complications of the op/treatment. I joked: "do you always give patients the worst case scenario". The reply - "The worst outcome is you might die", at which point she just walked off!

Brass Monkeys Round 1

Horrific conditions proved to be a real bike breaker - a massive vine like twig got caught up in my rear wheel tearing out a spoke and somehow loosening my freehub!! all my pads were down to the metal after 3 laps!!!

Brass Monkeys - the start - foreboding clouds...

Ecologist, climber, author and totally top fella - Eric Demay, was an early supporter of MuleBar in France. He's also a great photographer. Loved this one in the desert down under...
