Tour of Dengie Marshes - Hell of the East - Strudels Ben, Neil and Dave take 'em on...

On Sunday, 3 Strudels undertook the Tour Of Dengie Marshes - Hell of the East. A 75mile road race with only 10% on public, metalled roads. The rest is rough farm tracks and one section is just straight down the side of a field!

Positon on the first stretch of the road (people were being shelled even before the start of 'race-proper') was determined by the order in which the bunch rolled out of the carpark. From then on, it was 53x12 and 30mph-plus, so no chance to move up.

As it strung out, Neil was first to go backwards. Kevin Knox of Dulwich Paragon punctured so Neil offered him a wheel. Then it all blew to shreds. Dave and I spent some time sheltering in the convoy and trying to get back up to a group containing Danny Rudd and Al from Arctic Premier. This worked well for a further 2 laps (though constantly shelling riders as they turned for home) until Kev came back to us and started doing 25mph turns on the front which shelled me. Dave stayed with them and I continued on my own, determined not to return home with DNF by my name...

I battled-on for a further 2 purgatorial laps on my own, in the wind -all the while thinking I was last man on the road and as such in contention for Lanterene Rouge. After 5 laps, I got pulled out, only to turn around and see a small group with a bloody Mule Bar jersey in it! Neil missed out on Lanterene Rouge by one place. We have yet to establish whether Dave took 'Best 3rd Cat outside the top 10'.

Andy Lyons takes BMC UK Racing Team's first victory of the season.

I thought I'd let you know that Andy Lyons took the BMC UK Racing Team's first victory of the season yesterday in the Tour of the Dengie Marshes. Andy was one of the main animators of the race from the start, escaping on the opening lap with Darren Barclay (Arctic-Premier RT) only to be brought back by a hard chasing pack.

The unclassified roads and the notorious farm track, coupled with the fast pace of the race soon spilt the race all over the marshlands of Essex, with a strong lead group including last year's winner, Billy-Joe Whenman (Sports Beans-Wilier), National Cyclo-Cross Champion Jody Crawforth (Arctic-Premier RT), Martin Smith (AW Cycles) Lyons and Barclay setting the pace up ahead.

When Lyons, Barclay and Robert Jackson (Team Toachim) escaped with a lap to go there was no answer from the group and they managed to maintain the gap until the finish where Andy Lyons won the sprint from Darren Barclay, with Robert Jackson coming in third.

Results:
1.) ANDY LYONS: BMC UK RACING TEAM
2.) DARREN BARCLAY: ARCTIC/PREMIER RT
3.) ROBERT JACKSON: TEAM TOACHIM
4.) MICHAEL SMITH: LOTTO OLYMPIA TEAM INTERBIKE RT
5.) BEN THOMPSON: BMC UK RACING TEAM
6.) MARTIN SMITH: AW CYCLES CO.UK/GIANT
7.) JODY CRAWFORTH: ARCTIC/PREMIER RT
8.) BILLY JOE WHENMAN: SPORTS BEANS/WILIER
9.) SAM HUMPHESON: LONDON DYNAMO
10.) JAMES WHATLING: BMC UK RACING TEAM
