Old Mule Gives Young Bucks a Good Kicking

After a disappointing race at the National Marathon Champs at Margam Park, when he finished 3rd the Vets race, our “old mule” Pete Turnbull was back to winning ways at the Bristol Bike Fest in the 6 hour solo race.

Heavy rain all weekend left the course at Ashton Court just outside Bristol with a thick layer, but this suited Pete who always performs well in wet conditions when the riding is really tough. Our old mule had originally entered the pairs race with his coach George Rose, but illness forced George to withdraw the day before leaving Pete no option but to ride solo.

The 9.2 km course at Ashton Court is one of the most technical race loops in the country, with roots and rocks making the winding single-track all the more treacherous for the riders. For the first 3 hours, Pete recorded 33 minute laps but as the course dried out the mud became particularly sticky and the latter part of the course proved to be ever more difficult to ride. Lap times slowed to 36-37 minutes but by this time the Mulebar rider was already a lap ahead in the vets race and over 10 minutes ahead of all the solo riders in the open category. By the end of the race, the old mule had completed 10 laps, 2 laps ahead of his nearest rivals in the vets race and beating all the young bucks by over 12 minutes.

Standing room only for fun on the river

Mule, Roland Gurner, seen here has been taking to the water in Ely, Cambridgeshire, on his paddle board.

If you're interested in having a go, free taster sessions take place near The Cutter Inn, every Thursday from 6.30pm and every Saturday from 11.30am onwards.

Looks good Roland, we'll be along to join whenever we can!
